My Commitment
I find great joy in working with clients who are committed to living authentically and peacefully. I know that empathy and team work are essential for effective treatment, and I work hard to develop collaborative, trusting relationships with my clients. Carefully pacing my work, I practice in a manner that is respectful, down-to-earth, and often humorous. I take time to get to know each client individually before deciding on the best course of treatment. I am trained extensively in experiential, systems, cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, and trauma-informed models of psychotherapy.
Treatment Informed by Research
In both my clinical work and graduate level teaching, I have stayed up-to-date on key research on psychotherapy -- especially around recovery from trauma and loss, effective treatments for depression and anxiety, and skills for improving relationships. Thus, my clients can trust that I use techniques that are informed by empirical research.
Cultural Humility
LGBTQ Affirming Care
Throughout my career, I have actively pursued education and training in multiculturalism, gender identity development, and LGBTQ-positive care. I am committed to lifelong learning, listening, and humility in areas of multicultural understanding. Above all, I am personally dedicated to providing care that is affirming to people with a wide range of identities, including individuals in the LGBTQ community.
Scholarship
As a professor of clinical psychology for over 25 years, I supervised graduate students, conducted research and provided workshops and seminars to the public and to other professionals in the community. I taught courses in counseling and psychotherapy, including advanced courses in experiential therapy and the treatment of trauma survivors. I also published extensively, sharing my understanding and research in several areas of psychology. Click below for a copy of my professional resume/CV.
About Me
In my free time, I enjoy watching movies, reading, practicing yoga, exercising with good music, meals and games with family and friends, weeks at the beach, and walking with my good dog.
